One Pointless Experiment

October 29th 2009 21:00
Browsing around one of my favourite book shops one day, I came across a book called What Philosophy Can Tell You about Your Cat (edited by Steven D. Hales). Hmmm. A cat book with a difference. I was started to flick though the chapter on cruelty to cats. At first, I wasn’t impressed with it. The author was arguing that people should not be cruel to cats because it hurts them. Like, der, I thought. But I decided to delve into it a lot deeper. It turns out there are a lot of people who think cats and other animals don’t have feelings or that they are irrational so therefore, the value of animal life is less compared to human life. But the author points out that there are also irrational people in the world so that negates that argument.

The bit I found really painful to read was the paragraph about how a study on blindness was conducted by taping kittens’ eyes shut. “Why not ask a blind person?” asks the author. It seems pretty obvious and I could not think of a more futile experiment. My heart hurts for all those kittens who were forced to take part in this cruel and unnecessary experiment.
