Opening my Mind

When purchasing books, I need to keep an open mind. On the other hand, I do need to have some rules in place, else I would buy almost every book that caught my eye. Hence my previous hesitation about buying Blitzcat (war stories) and Michael Morpurgo’s books (I found some of the plots a little far fetched e.g. Kaspar Prince of Cats, the story of the cat that survived the sinking of the Titanic). But in the end, the need to read something new overcame my hesitation and I ended up purchasing both.
I enjoyed Blitzcat by Robert Westall. Given it was set in WWII it went without saying that soldiers, planes and bombings featured prominently in the storyline. That said, so did Lord Gort, the cat. I also enjoyed Michael Morpurgo’s the Nine Lives of Montezuma so I decided to buy more of his books. Given that Morgpurgo is a prolific writer, having published over a hundred books, I limited my purchases to the animal ones.
What is surprising is that even though most of his books are written for children, they do not always come with happy endings: The Dancing Bear and Born to Run’s endings surprised and disappointed me. But then, I like happy endings. But children don’t necessarily feel the same way: How else do you explain the popularity of the Brothers Grimm’s tales?
