Paul the Muscovy Duck Attacks Skinks

Do you remember my tales of Paul the aggressive muscovy duck? The one who used to attack my family by nipping on our heels? The one my parents had to give away to the local wildlife reserve after he became too aggressive to live with?

I was at the zoo one day, looking at skinks when my sister told me Paul used to attack them and bite their tails off. I don’t ever remember seeing this at all but my sister swears it did happen. Hearing about Paul’s aggression towards reptiles gave me the willies as it brought back a creepy childhood memory. When I was about twelve, there was a small lizard in our bathroom. I grabbed a plastic take away container and tried to trap it by putting the container over the lizard. Once I had the container sitting over the lizard, I could then slide the lid underneath it so it would be trapped inside the container. I could take the container outside and release the lizard back into the wild.

The trouble was, when I went to put the container over the lizard, its tail was sticking out and the force of my hand was enough to cut the tail off. So I had a tail-less lizard to deal with. I’m not sure what I did with the lizard but I remember seeing the tail on the bathroom tiles and worrying about maggots. I threw the tail out but I wondered how the lizard was going to now survive without its tail.

Dont stress Queenie - their tails are designed to detatch to save them from predators. They grow back very fast. See in your pic above? Where the stripe ends is the natural place for his tail to come off with no damage at all to the lizard. If they are cut closer to the body then they can die, but as soon as he feels trapped by a threat, he just 'lets it go' and hightails it to safety.

And its not unusual for a duck or chicken to eat things like lizards. My duck loves mice. She hunts them, standing very still and then grabbing them unawares - a quick snap of her head breaks the neck, then she breaks them into pieces in the water dish and gobbles them down. Yummy protien!

That's good to know.

Well, my first ducks, Brown-o and White-o, showed no interest in reptiles but they did like snails and flies.
