My last pair of pet ducks, Peanut and Pickle ended up being donated to a Mr James, a kind man who loved keeping ducks for pets. This was not by choice and I deeply resented being forced to give them up. They were beautiful ducks – white feathered, yellow billed birds who loved to quack.

After having two sets of pet ducks with my parents’ approval, I thought it was okay to get a third pair. But for some reason, my parents hit the roof. They said they were sick of us having ducks for pets and made me give them away. I rang around and luckily enough, one animal shelter that dealt with waterfowl had a register of people who were willing to take in animals. That was how I was led to Mr James.

Mr James was happy to take Peanut and Pickle. He even gave me and my sister permission to visit his place whenever we wanted to. So my sister, my best friend Andrea and I would spend many afternoons at Mr James’ place, playing with our ducks.

Although it was sad to lose them at first, after a while it didn’t seem to matter so much. After all, we could still visit them so it was almost the same as having them at home.

One afternoon Pickle wanted to mate. It wasn’t fun to watch. Peanut wasn’t interested. She wanted to be left alone and kept trying to resist Pickle’s advances. In the end, he resorted to force. Using his bill, he grabbed Peanut by her neck and mounted her. As soon as he was done, Peanut ran off.

A few weeks later there were some ducklings in the James’ backyard. Mr James didn’t seem to mind the new additions to his waterfowl family but I think my parents would have. I wonder now if it is possible to get ducks desexed.
