Lately my building has been inundated with flyers relating to services or goods for pets. I was particularly interested in one of them: a pet sitting service. Now how cools is that? For a moment I started thinking about leaving the world of finance to become a pet sitter. I could see myself walking dogs, playing with cats, feeding the goldfish and hamsters. As someone who hates people, this would be the perfect job for me. But then I wondered how much I would make. Obviously the pet sitting business would take a huge cut out of the fees. At about $20/dog walk, that wouldn’t leave much for me. Assuming 25% of that fee would go back to the business, I would have to walk at least ten dogs to be able to make enough to make it worthwhile to switch jobs. Maybe I could walk ten dogs simultaneously.
My neighbour used to be a dog walker. She thought it was good fun as she would walk a couple of dogs simultaneously. The owners didn’t seem to mind. And she also got to meet a lot of people in the park.
Then, as I kept perusing the flyer, other thoughts started to creep in. The flyer said their service was insured. I wondered then if I worked for them, would I be an employee or a contractor. Would they have insurance for me or would I have to get my own? The flyer also said their pet sitters knew how to administer oral medication. Ok. I’m stuffed then because I don’t know how to do this. Would they offer me training? Thinking about all the legal stuff started to put me off. At least in the world of finance all these issues are already handled by my employer. I’d probably also need a car to get around or at least, a drivers licence. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a good job after all. And think of the responsibility: what if I had to look after a sick dog and it died? That would be terrible.
On the other hand, think of the freedom. I wouldn’t be tied to a desk 9 to 5 every day. The hours would be more flexible so I could use the time to do stuff I normally have to do in my lunch hour like going to the bank or paying bills at the post office. And, best of all, I get to work with living beings that I do love: animals!
