PetMedics: Your 24-Hour Pet Ambulance Service
October 27th 2008 21:00
I read about this in last weekend’s Sun-Herald. PetMedics, the brain child of Sydney couple Niccole George and Gareth O’Connor, is a 24-hour animal emergency service. What a wonderful idea! And it’s about time.
The Sun-Herald reported that the idea came about after George, who worked as a veterinary nurse at North Shore Veterinary Hospital, had received some disturbing calls from owners who were unable to bring their sick or injured companion animals to the Hospital. One of these calls came from an elderly woman who was too frail to lift her dog into her car. When George told O’Connor about these calls, he said there should be a pet ambulance available. Bingo!
As someone who has thought about the responsibility having a companion animal must entail, I found this story reassuring. I can remember only too vividly the dreadful Christmas morning when my sister’s budgie became sick. There was a vet about 15 minutes’ walk from our place but it was shut. We were both extremely frustrated about having no one to turn to for help. In the end, the budgie died in my sister’s lap. My sister burst into tears and we spent the rest of the morning digging a hole in the garden so we could at least give the poor thing a decent burial.
