Playing Catch-up

Working away one Friday afternoon, I got a text message from an ex-colleague who wanted to catch up with me. Like Brett, he has this habit of only giving me half an hour’s notice.
That said, I was still keen to meet him as the last time I saw him was on the day Borders’ Chatswood store closed down. And you know how long ago that was, right?
We decided to meet outside Myer inn Pitt Street Mall. There he was, sitting there playing with his phone.
I went up to him and hissed, “Get back to work! All of you! Get back to work!” He would have known straight away that was me as I used to say that to him whilst waving a photo of Butterscotch in front of him.
“And how are Butterscotch and Gingersnap?” he asked me. “Are they still with Brett?”
“Nope. They have a new owner. Brett decided to hand them over to the lady who runs the boarding house who is also a vet. He figured she could give them better care than he could.”
“It was a shame he didn’t offer them to you.”
“I know!” I cried out. “But they settled into their new home and they get on with her Labrador and Brett figured it was better to just leave them where they are rather than uproot them again.”
“So I guess you will probably never see them again.”
“Yep,” I said, sighing. “That said, there’s a cat nearby I see almost every day now. I’m thinking of making her my wife. But I have to be careful with her. She bites and scratches and fights with dogs.”
“Which is what Butterscotch does.”
“Butterscotch is scared of dogs.” With the exception of his new parent’s Labrador.
“But he bites and scratches.”
“Yeah but it’s a nip and he doesn’t draw blood while this cat will,” I said, referring to the GTC.
