Possum Bites

Possum bites hurt. I know this from personal experience. Several days after spotting a possum in Hyde Park, I was walking in the same area when I spotted a possum on the ground. I looked at it. It looked at me and I watched in delight as it approached me. It seemed to be attracted to my feet. Next thing I knew, I felt a sharp chomp as it bit my toe.
Do you know how hard possums bite? I’ve been bitten by cats and a small dog and I was amazed at how painful it was compared to those two species. Moments later I could still feel the force of the chomp on my toe. I checked, expecting to see blood and was amazed not to find any.
Needless to say, after being bitten I moved away from the possum. To my chagrin, it continued to follow me. I put a large shopping bag behind me in an effort to shield my body from it but it continued to follow me. I kept going; I had almost reached the traffic light and it was still following me. Was it going to follow me across the road?
To my relief, that was when the possum decided to take another route. I made my way home safe and sound, and made a mental note to be more wary of possums in the future.
