Power Bills

Brett’s homeless. My boys are homeless. And, now I’m homeless. I cannot believe three leases in a row, I have been asked to leave as the owner is selling. Brett, being a thirty year veteran of the Sydney rental scene, has never been forced to move due to a sale. That said, he’s been forced to move due to other reasons.
I’m sick of moving around. But with the GFC and people overcommitting themselves, there’s a huge turnover in Sydney properties.
I used the opportunity to ask Brett if he would be interested in getting a two-bedder with me.
“There’s one up the road going for $540 which is within your budget. And, between the two of us, it would be $270 each which is nothing compared to the rent we’re paying.”
Brett, currently living rent-free at Mummy and Daddy’s said he would think about it. That made me think of the time my best friend Andrea and I were comparing power bills.
“Mine was a couple of hundred,” sighed Andrea. “But that was between four people.”
“Mine hit the three digit mark,” I said. “I could not believe it was that high, considering it’s not even winter. Brett’s used to be $800.”
“How can his bill be so high? He lived on his own.”
“He’s the sort of person who goes to bed with the TV on, leaves the heater on 24/7 in case the cats get cold, leaves the lights on when he goes to bed in case the cats can’t see and has two stereos running at the same time.”
“That’s crazy. Cats can see in the dark and they have fur anyway so they don’t need the heater. As for the stereo…”
I got the shock of my life one day when I was in Brett’s bedroom with the cats while he was in the living room. He had been listening to music and turned the stereo off. I then heard a blast of music beside me. I spun around and there was his ipod playing on the docking station. Why would you even bother having it on when you’re not even listening to it?
People are strange.
