Rabbit Therapy

Recently, I was invited to a friend’s baby shower. At the time, I was going through some tough times and the last place I wanted to be was to be surrounded by screaming children and pregnant women exchanging childbearing tips. Not only that, the location was not exactly public-transport friendly.
I was thinking of bailing out but at the last minute I decided to go on the fact that several friends from interstate would also be there, some of whom I had not seen for years although we keep in touch via Facebook (ah, the wonders of technology). I also thought it would take my mind off my problems.
I am so glad I went. Firstly, the party was swish and the children were mostly well behaved, with tantrums few and far between. There were many childfree people I could talk to. And there were my friends. But the best part of the baby shower was the petting zoo. The moment I heard that there were animals nearby, I was out the door, searching for my four and two-legged friends. I ended up holding a chick, guinea pig and a speckled rabbit (see photo). I got to stroke a goat.
Now they say simply stroking a cat is enough to lower one’s blood pressure. Well, I experienced the same reaction just by stroking the rabbit. I could feel my heart rate start to slow down and a sense of tranquillity. I felt more in touch with the rabbit than I did with the humans nearby.
The only problem was the rabbit’s front claws would dig into my collarbone from time to time. It reminded me of the time I was lying down at Brett’s house and Gingersnap came over and kneaded my shoulder with his paws. While it was painful, I appreciated his affectionate gesture.
