There’s only one thing my sister and I don’t like about Sydney’s Vivid Festival. Well, make it two things, actually. One) it is held during the coldest time of the year and two) it tends to rain during the festival.

Just look at this year’s festival. It seemed to rain on the weekends, right when everyone wants to check out the festival. When my sister got annoyed when it started raining while she started taking photos of some of the displays, it brought back memories of last year’s Vivid Festival. Her comment was particularly spot on as I remember Brett was involved in some of the audio visual installations so I was there every night for about two weeks, catching up with him. I also remembered how often it rained, how cold I was and if it wasn’t for the fact I could catch up with Brett for my daily update on Butterscotch and Gingersnap, I wouldn’t have bothered going at all. Another issue was the novelty factor: While it was fun to hang out with Brett on the first night or so, by the fourth night the novelty started to wear off. Brett understood: “These installations are not designed for people to look at night after night after night,” he said.

But back to my sister. She’s a real homebody, unlike me. While she used to come out to the city every weekend, after the closure of several of her favourite shops, she also stopped. Ditto me and Fred. So it took a lot of pleading to get her to see the Vivid Festival, only to see her fun literally washed away. It was just as well I was there to hold the umbrella while she took her photos.

But I’m also getting tired of all the rain. I’m beginning to compare Sydney to Seattle, which is also known for its rain. We really are raining cats and dogs.
