R.I.P. Charlie the Smoking Chimp

Seeing this photo in last Friday’s paper would have had me laughing if the situation wasn’t so tragic HERE .
Charlie reminded me of my old man: I remember how Papa loved to sit there in the same position and puff away. If my sister or I coughed or tried to wave the smoke away, he would growl at us for being fusspots. Sadly, Papa is now recovering from lung cancer and regrets all the years and money he spent smoking.
From the account in the Australian, it appears that Charlie’s bad habit was voluntary. I’d hate to think he was encouraged or forced to smoke just to entertain us silly humans…
