R.I.P. Dymocks World Square

I’m beginning to think Minister for Small Business Nick Sherry is right when he said there will be no book stores in five years time: walking home from Chinatown over the weekend, I decided to take a detour through World Square shopping centre just to have a quick browse at their Dymocks store. Yep, you guessed it, it has shut down.
Is the economy so bad that books have really become that unpopular? A few weeks ago, I went to my local St Vinnies to have a browse at their books section and noticed how small it was. I then noticed a sign at the entrance of the store saying they no longer were accepting donated books.
It’s beginning to feel as if books will become a rarity. Some people have told me to change my old school habits and go nu school by getting one of those reading devices but I’m not inclined to go down that path; it’s just not the same as being to hold a book in your hand and feeling the cover and paper as you read.
Maybe I should hold onto my library instead of trying to cull it as I was originally planning to do once I had assembled my Borders bookcase. When I showed photos of it to a friend, he said, “Queenie, I like you and all but sometimes I really wonder why I still associate with you.”
An acquaintance, upon overhearing this conversation, asked, “Are you now going to re-create a Dymocks store in your unit as well?”
