R.I.P. Jane Burton
March 10th 2011 21:00
As an owner of about thirty cat books, renowned animal photographer Jane Burton’s work is featured prominently in most of them. I must admit I was never a big fan of her work (sorry!) – I found her photos too grainy and not “pretty” enough. Mind you, I was comparing her to the Queen of Cute Animal Photography AKA Rachael Hale. That was until I flicked through a copy of Kittens and Kittens, and A Cat’s Life. My heart soared and I quickly became a fan; both volumes contained photos that were not in my cat books. They should have been called The Best of Jane Burton as they truly showcase the highlights of her photographic career.
I was also saddened to hear of her passing; because her work is so ubiquitous, I naturally assumed she was still alive and kicking, and photographing cats.
Unfortunately, both volumes had been damaged which was why I didn’t purchase them. Then, luckily enough, I recently found a brand new copy at Dymocks of the kittens book so I happily parted with my seventy dollars. I am now trying to track down a brand new copy of the cat book. I prefer to shop locally as I don’t trust online retailers in general or Australia Post for that matter. (Brett recently ordered the same CD twice from Amazon and on both occasions, it never materialised. Amazon told Brett they had definitely shipped it and said he needed to follow up with AP on what had happened to it. AP couldn’t give Brett an answer. In the meantime, Amazon refunded him. “I just want my CD!” moaned Brett. It also doesn’t help when Fred regales me with tales he has heard from tenants and his postie friends of parcels that have been lost in the post.)
