R.I.P. Princess: Camrose Cat Killing (part 1)

September 10th 2008 21:00
This was one of the worst cases of animal cruelty I have ever come across. In December 2007, four teenage boys in Camrose, Canada break into a house over two days. On the second day they put the family pet, Princess, in a microwave oven. The poor cat screamed in pain for ten minutes before dying. I can imagine how much she would have howled in pain. Tears almost come into my eyes as I’m writing this. I feel so sad. I can’t believe people can be so cruel.

It reminds me of a case a few years ago where some teenagers banged a kitten against a wall before cutting it in half. Another case that makes me shudder was that of Eeyore, a cat that was found with its ears cut off (Cat Fancy magazine, Aug 08). What angers me is how people choose to pick on those who cannot defend themselves. It’s such a low act of cowardice. It also makes me wonder how many other animals are out there who are being abused. No wonder I hate people.

As a child I wasn’t overly fond of cats. All the cats in my neighbourhood were scaredy cats or unfriendly so I preferred dogs. It wasn’t until I was an adult and started coming into contact with friendly cats that I started also liking cats. Despite this, I would never dream of harming them or any other animal. Even watching fishing shows give me the willies when I see presenters killing fish they’ve just caught.

The weekend is near. I’m going to retreat into my own private world and forget about the human race for a while. Even though I’m not happy with Butterscotch at the moment after he bit and scratched me, I would never dream of hurting him. People ask me why I didn’t just smack him but I couldn’t. Smacking an animal – let alone a human – just isn’t my style.

Its appalling. I blame the destructive instinct in humans, so many of us seem to have it. I once saw young children throwing rocks at a family of ducks. I stopped them, but what was the possible motivation?

I prefer to save my destructive urges for the humans.

As for Butterscotch - smacking wont work on a cat. You have to beat him at his own game. The behaviour is loving, but it is also dominating. He's showing you that he is your boss, your 'man cat'. To win, when he wraps around your hand with claws in your wrist (yes, it is painful) wiggle him, pick him up by his own grip on your hand and ruffle his belly with your fingertips. Garunteed, after a full on scratch attack he'll bolt off thinking you won.

Just a suggestion - you dont have to take it - but you will get used to the pain. My hands are so hard now a cat scratch is nothing. I got headbutted by my colt this morning. I almost passed out, he didnt even notice it happened!

Hey Kleonaptra,

I'm the same. With animals I am patient and loving but I can't stand being around people. That's disgusting kids would throw rocks at ducks like that. Have you noticed most serial killers started off being cruel to animals before moving onto humans? These kids are serial killers in the making.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will try it next time Butterscotch tries to scratch and bite me.

Why did your colt headbutt you?

I was pouring his feed into the feedbin - I leaned over to pour it in, he leaned over to start eating. We smashed in the middle.

Colts love threat displays where they toss their heads a lot, and mine is very good at it. We are frequently headbutted, stepped on, barged over and trampled. My horses are spoiled!

Can I come back as one of your pets?

You are not the first one to ask me that! The ducks and pigeon get hot water bottles if its cold, my winter jacket is like six years old and ripped - the horses are in new $200 rugs!
