Years ago, long before Butterscotch and Gingersnap were even born, Brett had a white cat called Snowflake.
One day he found this stray cat hanging around his place and he decided to keep it, much to his young nephew’s delight. His nephew was a cat lover and loved to play with him. Then came the day Brett accidentally ran Snowflake over.
Brett was unaware of what he had done. When he came home, there was no sign of Snowflake. He assumed he had simply run away. His nephew was upset over the cat’s disappearance. Brett tried to console him by telling him a story of how Snowflake has gone to a beautiful place called cat heaven.
Months later, Brett’s neighbour told him what had happened. He had found Snowflake squashed on the driveway. Being a good neighbour, he picked up the remains and put them in the bin without thinking of letting Brett know what had happened.
Brett’s nephew was distraught when he found out the truth. For days on end, all he would say to Brett was, “You killed Snowflake. You killed Snowflake.” No amount of explaining to him that it was accidental made a difference and why should it? Accidental or not accidental, what matters is Snowflake is gone. If someone accidentally ran over my ducks, I wouldn’t have been thrilled either, no matter how mitigating the circumstances were.
The nephew is now a teenager. Still a cat lover, he now has Butterscotch and Gingersnap to play with, along with his own cat.

I'm surprised the neighbour took so long to tell my friend. It obviously never occurred to him that might friend might have been worried about his missing cat.

When I was four I hid in the laundry because my dad was crying in th kitchen. I had never seen my dad cry and I was frightened. I found out later that he had backed the car over my cat and was distraught over how to tell me. Accidents happen but your friend's neighbour should have told them immediately.
