RSPCA Had to Put Down 170 Cats and Kittens

I felt very sad when I read this story:
RSPCA story
These kinds of stories always make me feel helpless. I end up wondering how some people can be so careless. Like, often you’ll hear people from animal shelters saying people tend to dump their pets when they are on holidays or move house as they don’t know what to do with them. Like, hello? Ever heard of pet sitters or animal kennels? Or even asking a friendly neighbour to feed them while you’re away? It’s not rocket science.
In the case of moving house, you take your pets with you. Like, der…I mean, if you’re going to be that careless, don’t get a pet in the first place. It’s not like they don’t cost money – even if you happen to get a ‘freebie’ you will still have to pay for food and veterinary care as well as collars, toys, a kennel…I was having the same thoughts when I was watching RSPCA Animal Rescue on Wednesday night. They did a story about a woman who had been previously convicted of animal cruelty and was still abusing her animals. She had several dogs, sheep and cattle and kept them in appalling conditions. She had one dog chained to an area where an animal carcass lay nearby. And she had shot dead one of her horses and left it in a creek to rot. She obviously didn’t care about her animals’ welfare so why have them in the first place?
And if I wasn’t feeling sad enough, I was moved to tears from watching RSPCA. I am also halfway through a book called The Loss of a Pet by Wallace Sife. And on top of that, I had a fight with a friend a few days ago over cats. (He was telling me to start reading The Financial Review instead of ‘wasting’ my time reading books about cats. Well, I told him where to go after that. I hate people who like to tell me what do do, especially when it concerns my love of reading and animals.)
