Scruffy the Silky Terrier

One of the benefits of being best friends with Andrea is having a friend whose imagination was as wild as mine and who appreciates my imagination. Not to mention her sense of humour.
I have a memory of being inside Andrea’s house one day. It might have been raining; as normally Andrea and I would play outside on the swing set, walk up the road to the local tuckshop and get $1 worth of jelly babies (we always told the tuckshop lady, “No black ones, please.”), followed by an afternoon stroll around the university that was opposite her house.
Anyway, I remember we were bored out of our minds from being cooped up inside the house all day so we started making up stories. It was the early eighties and Duran Duran had just had a string of chart toppers so Andrea’s mother’s magazines were full of pictures of them. We were only 9 and 10 at the time, too young to be into pop music so we couldn’t understand what the all the fuss was about. So on this boring day I started making up this story about how Duran Duran’s guitarist, John Taylor, was really a silky terrier called Scruffy. He could alternate between being a human and a dog.
We soon got bored with that story as it lacked a plot so I held a picture of John Taylor in front of my face and started chasing my sister around the house, saying I was Scruffy and I was going to catch her. My sister ran inside Andrea’s room and shut the door. I stood outside still with the picture in front of my face going, “Woof, woof!” Ahhh, the mischief children get up to…
