Sooky Butterscotch

I had always thought Butterscotch was feisty. Here was a cat who liked to bite and scratch people. I have seen many scratches on Brett’s arms, evidence of the many fights Brett has goaded Butterscotch into. The same cat bit Brett’s nephew after he forced him to play air drums with his front paws. I’ve also been bitten and pawed at the same time: Butterscotch resorted to the old feline trick of lying on the ground and showing his belly. I made the mistake of stroking it and was instantly trapped; teeth and claws were on my hand. I had to slowly get him to release me.
So I was surprised to see Butterscotch flee whenever Gingersnap has picked a fight with him.
When I asked Brett about this, he said Butterscotch was scared of Gingersnap.
“He annoys Gingersnap and when Gingersnap decides to fight back, Butterscotch knows he has gone too far and backs off,” explained Brett.
I think there is more to this. Why else would Butterscotch always yowl and then flee from the scene as if he was terrified?
“A few days ago Butterscotch was in the backyard. I went to stroke him and he growled at me. I looked up and saw a black cat. Butterscotch then chased it. He’s very territorial,” said Brett.
