Walking through the CBD one night, I noticed a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel following a woman. Both were walking towards me. When I got close enough, I could see the dog was walking with a limp. Poor dog, I thought, wondering why the woman wouldn’t get the limp fixed. By now, the dog had passed me. I turned around for a second look and realised it was missing its front left leg. Poor thing.
It’s quite surreal seeing a three-legged dog. Firstly, the absent limb does not appear to be as obvious as, say, that of a one-legged person. The observer’s brain recognises that something about the dog doesn’t look right but it takes a few seconds for it to register that the dog is missing a limb. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at this picture of a three-legged dog:

There is another dog I often see that has a wonky front leg. The leg is always stiff, as if the dog can’t bend it. My ex-neighbour knows about this dog and gets upset as she knows the owner won’t take it to the vet. The dog smells, too. My ex-neighbour has been inside the owner’s flat and says her unit smells of dog urine.
