Stupid Comments

“I don’t get why people just don’t mind their own business,” I whined to Fred after getting into an argument with a stranger. “Especially about me walking and reading. When I was on holidays, I saw a couple of people doing the same thing. I felt like asking them if they get people making comments about it.”
“I don’t see how different it is to listening to an ipod while walking,” said Fred. “Both involve one of the senses being occupied elsewhere so why don’t people pick on those who listen to music while they walk?”
Good point. Good question.
I had to think about that one for a moment. “Because humans are so visual, people think it’s okay to do that which is why they object to those who walk and read. Not that it’s any of their business what anyone else does.”
My psychologist friend gave me some insight on most people’s inability to think outside the square: “Most people think things have to be done a certain way. When you do something different, they feel the need to tell you what they think is the correct way. It would never occur to them – because you do think outside the square – that you have taken a different approach.” Not to mention that it is commonplace and therefore, because most people are sheep, socially acceptable while walking and reading is not.
This comment came after a woman had a go at me just because I was dragging my cardigan on the ground. She had pointed it out to me and didn’t like the fact I kept dragging it on the ground. In response, I continued to drag it on the ground in front of her in an exaggerated fashion.
“Why should she care?” I said to Fred at the time. “It’s my cardigan and if I want to drag it on the ground like Pig Pen that’s my business. It’s not like I’m telling her to do the same thing.”
“Exactly,” said Fred.
