Stupid Questions

One of Brett’s friends is a top Sydney DJ which meant one night Brett and I got on the guest list at Tatlers, which is supposed to be one of Sydney’s most exclusive nightclubs. I had heard about how you needed a password to get in and how it changes regularly. Even when I was leaving, the doorman told me he hoped I would come again but I still needed to be on the guest list before he could let me in!
It was an extremely surreal experience in that I expected the crowd and the staff to be really stuck up but it was the complete opposite.
“It’s reverse psychology,” said Fred when I told him. “Because it’s so hard to get into, if you can get in the door the people in there would assume you are part of their crowd and accept you straight away.”
The only thing that annoyed me and Brett were being asked stupid questions by some of the patrons: in my case, it was “Where do you come from?” while in Brett’s case, it was “Are you gay?”
At the time, I was unaware that Brett was even being asked such a stupid question. I was dancing away happily to the music Brett’s friend played. Hours later when I decided to take a break, Brett sat next to me and started complaining about stupid questions.
“One of those women at that table over there came up to me and said, ‘I know I don’t know you but are you gay?’ I’m not offended by the question but I had to ask her what gave her the right to ask me it in the first place considering she doesn’t know me. She didn’t answer. Why do people ask such stupid questions?’” he vented.
“It’s funny you should say that as one of the patrons asked me where I came from. I hate that question. Get to know me first before you ask me about my racial background but don’t make it the first question and don’t walk away after I’ve answered it.”
When I told the wise frog (otherwise known as Fred), he commiserated with Brett. “That’s a highly offensive question. It’s like asking someone what they like to do in bed. And it’s no one else’s business anyway.”
Having seen Brett with numerous women over the years, I’m even surprised people would even think he was gay.
