Susan and I Cover Brown-o and White-o’s Nostrils

Call it immaturity. My sister and I were in our mid teens when we got our first pet ducks, Brown-o and White-o. We used to play with them. We also liked to perform experiments on them to see how they’d react. One experiment was to feed them Coca-Cola. The two quackers took a sip and then shook their ducky heads, making the Coke fly out of their bills. Another thing we liked to do was to sit next to them and gently cover their nostrils with our fingers. Our ducks would draw their heads back so they could breathe again. My sister and I would say, “Clever birds.”
Another time, when I was nine and my sister was six, I decided to make my neighbour’s dog a leash so I could walk him around. The problem was I didn’t have anything that vaguely resembled as leash apart from an old apron. So I tied the apron around Benji and made him go on a walk. When Mr Harry spotted us, he hit the roof. He told me in no uncertain terms to take the apron off, which I did pronto. That was the only time I ever saw Mr Harry angry.
Actually, as a neighbour, Mr Harry was quite forgiving. Who else would let two boisterous kids on his property to play with his gentle cross bred dog? There was also a tuxedo cat called Lady Hamilton but she didn’t like people so we stayed away from her.
This makes me wonder if other people have been guilty of performing silly experiments on their pets. Have you as a child done anything silly with an animal?
