Testing 1, 2, 3

A few nights ago my phone went off during dinner time. My two main mobile contacts, Fred and Brett, seldom call at that time so I was wondering who it was. To my surprise, it was Brett: He had messaged me to say he was going to put a post on Facebook asking if any of his 900 friends can give the boys a temporary home. He asked me not to respond to his post.
What is this? I thought. I already told him I could find accommodation for them. Then there’s Vicky and another friend of his who is cat-mad.
When I asked him, he confirmed what I had already thought: He was testing the Facebook friendship waters. I thought the whole thing was stupid.
“I wanted to see who else would respond,” he said. “Of course, I got a poor response.”
Damn right, I thought.
“Why not just ask Vicky or Mandy?” I asked. “They already have cats and I remember reading a post Mandy put on your wall about how she would love to have her cats meet yours.”
“I didn’t want to ask them because they’ve already got cats,” was his reply.
“What about me then? You know I love them and I would make sure my friend takes care of them.”
“It’s not that I don’t want you to take them but it’s too much to ask of you.”
“Well, where are they then?” I asked, worried he might have surrendered them to the local animal shelter.
“They’re at my brother’s. He’s going to look after them for a week or two until the boarding house can take them again.”
I then found out his brother lives near his parents’, where Brett is still staying at until he finds a new place. Say no more…
