I am now in the process of creating a miniature Borders in my own home. Over the weeks, I have been buying books that bring back happy memories of shopping there. That was the easy bit. Now comes the hard part which is assembling the bookcase. At the moment, it’s still in bits and pieces. I plan to get Fred to help me put it together.

In the meantime, I have bought accessories to go with the bookcase: the signs, the stickers, and the little subject signs they put along the shelves. I’ve also bought a Borders bag (the one that comes rolled up in a little bag, not the plastic ones) and, picked up some bits and pieces of paraphernalia such as the VIP cards and old gift vouchers I found lying on their floor.

I was telling Fred about how people were actually buying Borders light bulbs.

“But they’re not ordinary light bulbs,” mocked Fred. “They’re Borders light bulbs. Do the staff wear a uniform?”

“No.”

“Too bad. You could have bought a uniform as well.”

“They’re even selling their signs. I bought some and I’ve noticed other people doing the same thing so I’m not the only one.”

“They will probably toss out their unsold bookshelves,” said my removalist when he went to deliver the thirty slats of wood that made up my bookcase. “Too bad you couldn’t have waited until they closed down. You could have scored a bargain.”

That was working on the assumption that there would be unsold shelves. The one I bought only had two bays which was perfect for my one bedder; the rest took up too much space.
