The Caterpillar Killing
September 22nd 2011 21:00
So far, I have been successful in trying not to kill insects in my home. I normally let the odd cockroach or spider out the door, not that I have that many to begin with due to me living in a well maintained building that has a lovely English garden in the front. That garden, of course, is a caterpillar haven which is hell for caterpillarphobics like me.
In my case, I try to keep it a case of out of sight, out of mind. And then, one morning, I left my unit only to be greeted with the sight of a caterpillar across the hallway. I decided to leave it there while I left my place to run an errand. Half an hour later, I returned and wondered where the caterpillar had gone. If it goes anywhere near my doorway, it’s dead, I thought. I hoped it had moved elsewhere, preferably somewhere far, far away from my unit. I looked around only to find the caterpillar was now almost at the ceiling and moving towards my unit where it could then crawl under the door, get into my home, crawl into my bed while I’m asleep…
I decided to follow the example of one caterpillarphobic I know. I then grabbed a pole I happened to have lying inside my unit, put a tissue on top of it and used it to squash the caterpillar. I then spent the rest of the day feeling bad for killing it but then again, the caretaker might have done exactly the same thing. I know that Fred, the caretaker of another building, has to kill many bugs he sees – not because he wants to but because he is paid to keep the building presentable and the owner and tenants expect it to be pest free.
