The Catgut Evening bag
March 22nd 2010 21:00
A few years ago, I bought a small silk evening bag from Prada. Along with the certificate of authenticity and cleaning instructions, there was a small card that said parts of the bag had been made from catgut. Taking it literally, I screwed my face in disgust. Surely they don’t really use cats’ guts to make handbags, do they?
This recollection led to a discussion at work about what cat gut is. My colleague said, “Don’t they use it for tennis racquets?”
I consulted Wikipedia. “'Usually sheep or goat intestines are used, but it is occasionally made from the intestines of a hog, horse, mule, pig or donkey,'” I read out to my colleague.
“So many animal choices. Which do I choose?” asked my colleague. “What’s with the cat association?”
“Wikipedia says it might be an abbreviation for cattlegut,” I said.
“Ahhh…”
“It still sounds gross,” I said. Imagine if cats were really used to make catgut. I could imagine Butterscotch yowling in protest at this shameless exploitation of his relatives.
