The Coin Diary

One of the many perks of being a cleaner-cum-caretaker is finding money. Lots of it. My cleaner/caretaker friend Fred has found $5 in the drain he cleans (“twice”), $50 in the bin when he pulled an umbrella out of it and found the note embedded inside the folds, $20 in a KFC box he found in the car park, $100 in USD behind a fridge…and on and on it goes. So much that Fred now keeps a diary of how much money he finds.
I have had similar success just by keeping my eyes on the ground: I once found $500 in an old ratty tatty wallet that was lying under a tree. I would have returned it to the owner had there been i.d. in the wallet. On four other occasions I have found wallets with money in them – the wallets all had i.d. inside them so I returned them to the owners or handed them in to the nearest police station.
Fred once had a surreal experience: he was walking to one of the buildings he maintains and found a $50 note. He stopped and picked it up. He then found another $50. Then he found a $20. He was wondering if it was literally raining money when he decided to wander up and down the street to see if he could find anymore money. That was when his luck stopped.
I had a similar experience, albeit on a much smaller scale. Walking past the bin screamer’s building one morning, I saw something gold on the pavement. I took a closer look and found a $2 coin. I then found two $1 coins before finding thirty cents. I, too, began to wonder if it was raining money but found no more. That said, a few days ago, I walked past the same building and found another two dollar coin in the same spot. I like to think that it’s the bin screamer’s money that I am picking up – perfect revenge after the time she screamed at me for putting some recycling in her bin.
