The Daily News

A few days after the royal wedding and Osama’s death, I was flicking through the paper my workplace gets when I noticed a story about a ginger cat. I went and bought my own copy.
Fred, being a caretaker, doesn’t have to buy his own copy of the paper. One of the tenants in one of the buildings he looks after kindly places the paper in the recycling bin each morning. Fred can then get his paper for free.
“You must get today’s Sydney Morning Herald,” I said to Fred. “There’s a picture of a cute ginger cat on the last page. I bought it just for the picture.”
Fred chuckled. “It gets like that.”
Exactly. When I showed him my latest cat books that I had obtained during the Borders’ closing down sale, Fred went as far as to say I was obsessed. “It looks like you’re buying everything cat related.”
So what? I felt like saying. Borders will be gone soon and so there won’t be as many cat books for me to buy. And besides, I’m stocking up for books to read during these bone cold winter nights where there is nothing I enjoy more than curling up in bed with a really good book.
