The Day I Almost Bought a Fur Handbag
June 3rd 2008 21:00
Shopping one day I spotted a fuchsia handbag that was in the shape of a cylinder. It was furry and soft to the touch. I fell in love with the colour and shape so much I put it on lay-by straight away. I put down a 20% deposit which was $14.
In my excitement, I didn’t think much about the fur. I had assumed it was faux fur otherwise I wouldn’t have lay-byed it as I don’t believe in wearing real fur.
I continued shopping at other stores. Now the store that I had just bought the handbag from was part of a small chain of shops that operate in the Sydney CBD. So it wasn’t long before I saw other versions of the same bag in their other stores. I went inside their other shop to see what else this store carried that the first store didn’t have. While I was there I had a good look at the bag I had just lay-byed. Now that the excitement had worn off, I was looking at it more carefully and this time, I swore the fur felt real. Just to double check, I went into other shops that I knew sold fake fur products to compare. To my shame, I discovered I had definitely lay-byed a real fur product.
I decided to cancel my lay-by. The shop assistant was not pleased but she said she would let me have a credit note so I ended up getting some earrings instead. When the girl realised I was only buying enough goods to cover the value of the credit note, she had a go at me. She said I was ‘supposed’ to use the credit note as a deposit for goods that came to the same price as the handbag i.e. $70. I snapped at her and said just because she had given me a credit note for $14 didn’t mean I was obliged to buy $70 worth of goods. She then gave me a lecture on stuffing her around and I was like, you can lecture me as much as you like as I don’t intend to shop here again. And I never have.
