The Desperate Search for a cat mug

November 28th 2010 21:00

This sounds crazy. Out shopping one day, I spied a cute dog mug. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I decided to get it. The person behind the counter said he did have a cat mug but had sold it a few days before. He also happened to mention he had seen these mugs in another store near Canberra but I didn’t pay too much attention to that as I was sure I had seen them at Paws a While, a Sydney CBD store that specialises in animal themed gifts.

My next stop was, of course, Paws a While. My search revealed that while they used to stock this particular brand of mug, they hadn’t done so for a year.

No worries, I thought, I could always shop online. A quick Google led me to the manufacturer’s website which had photos of many other equally gorgeous products. Unfortunately, it did not say how I could purchase their items but it did mention they had stores overseas.

Okay, so this wasn’t going to be as straightforward as I first thought. A day later, I went back to the store where I bought the dog mug. The person behind the counter was different. She gave me the name of the person who served me and told me when he would be in. She also gave me the name of the distributor of the cat and dog mugs. I called the distributor, hoping they could tell me where I could buy the cat mug. Unfortunately, they couldn’t without a bar code. I went back to the store and got the bar code. The distributor then told me they no longer carried this particular style.

By this point, I was ready to give up. But I decided to return to the store and ask the man who sold me the mug where he had seen the feline version. He couldn’t remember the name of the store but told me it was located in Berrima. “It’s the only dog and cat themed shop there,” he said.

Googling revealed nothing. I then started calling a few gift shops in the area. That was when I got lucky: the person who answered the phone at La Di Da told me there was a shop called Bow Meow which had just opened. I searched the White Pages and bingo!

I have placed my order and am eagerly waiting the delivery of my mug. Check it out here HERE
