The dog who is Afraid of Cats
June 27th 2010 21:00
Walking around the block with one of my neighbours one afternoon, I noticed that her dog suddenly froze.
“Come on,” she said to her Australian Silky Terrier.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“She’s afraid of cats,” she said.
I looked up and noticed my new feline tuxedo cat sitting near Brett’s old house. The cat sat there watching us while Georgie, the terrier, hid in the bushes.
Eventually, my neighbour got Georgie moving but she gave the cat a wide berth. I was amazed; Georgie was slightly bigger than the cat. How can she be afraid of something smaller than her?
But who am I to talk? I am scared of larvae which my friend Fred thinks is silly.
“You must be millions of times bigger than they are,” he said one day. “How can you be afraid of them?”
Watching Georgie freeze also reminded me of the time I saw a cat try to attack one of my ducks. This time, the situation was in reverse: the duck was much larger than the cat but she didn’t care. She got close enough to White-o to scratch her before White-o walked off at the last minute. Robert the cat (I know, she’s female but by the time my sister and I had discovered what sex she was the name had already stuck) ended up swiping the air.
