The Downside to Eating Less Meat

After reading Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation, I felt compelled to eat less meat. I was also trying to lose weight which gave me another reason to cut back on my meat consumption.
Two years later, I managed to lose twenty kilos before putting three back on due to the long hours at work. While I am now in the healthy weight range, my doctor says my iron levels could be higher.
“Do you eat red meat?” she asked me
I had to stop and think for a moment. “Ummm…Not much…I don’t really like red meat…I eat mainly chicken…”
She then told me to try to eat more red meat or, as an alternative, eat vegetables that are high in iron. Neither sounded palatable.
That said, I recently attended a sausage sizzle at work. I hoped they would have other foods apart from sausages since I don’t like them. I brought a falafel roll in case I didn’t like any of the food. But then I forgot about all the vegetarians and vegans they had to cater for.
When I got there, I was overwhelmed by the smell of sausage meat. My eyes scanned the food and spotted what looked liked be vegetable patties. I grabbed two patties, some hamburger buns and mustard and sat down to eat. Yep, I was right. Not only were they vegetable patties but they had some kind of Indian spices in them. They tasted delicious – unlike my mum’s vegan cooking which is simply dreadful. Maybe becoming a vegan won’t be so hard after all.
