The Garbage Man

Like all good friends, Fred the caretaker has helped me move house. Twice. When my sister told my parents, she did not know how to say caretaker in Cantonese so she simply called him the garbage man.
Fred was horrified when I told him this. “Couldn’t she have said superintendent, supervisor, maintenance person, manager?”
“Well, garbage man is sort of true. You do wheel the bins in and out of the building.”
This leads me to my next topic: Recycling. One day I found a packet of chips on the ground. I checked inside. They looked okay but I removed the top layer. I later offered them to Fred. Fred was munching away when I realised I should have told him about their origins.
“Before you take more of them, I should tell you I found them on the ground,” I said.
“How could you? How do you know where they’ve been, what the previous owner did with their fingers?” I found this odd coming from someone who decided to keep some of his client’s food after she paid him to clean out her refrigerator one weekend.
“The box is sealed.”
“It doesn’t matter. The fact that it was on the ground makes it disgusting.”
