The Grass IS Greener on the Other Side

It’s an old saying but it’s so true. Often we wish for something and when it does happen, it doesn’t turn out to be the way we want it to be. Or, as my friend Fred would say, “You get what you want but there’s always a fly in the ointment.” Too true.
The reason why I am having these thoughts is that my colleagues and I have moved desks. I am now sitting near someone who I used to get along with famously in the past. I used to think how great it would be if we sat in the same area. So at first I was overjoyed to hear we would be sitting in the same area but ever since the move, he’s been grouchy and snappy. I know it’s not personal as I overheard him snapping at someone else this morning and the other day he told me he does get snappy but man, it’s sad to see this guy’s ‘other’ side. It’s also off-putting as it makes me want to avoid him. As usual, my thoughts then turned back to the animal kingdom. What I love about animals is that they tend to be consistent, particularly once they get to know you. And if they do get mad, there’s normally a reason behind it and they will give you one or two warning signals. Like the time I was rocking Higgins the cat on my neighbour’s lounge and all of a sudden he let out a big hiss and bared his moggie fangs at me. I knew he wasn’t happy so I backed off and he went back to his normal friendly self. It later turned out the rocking motion was upsetting his stomach.
This experience has been a bit of an eye-opener. No wonder I have the policy of trying not to get too involved with work colleagues. Just come in, do your job and then go home. It’s just not worth the aggravation.
