I know and know of a couple of people who’ve smuggled pets into their houses/units without their landlord’s permission. A friend told me he knew someone who was so desperate not to be found out that they flushed the kitty litter down the toilet. This was fine until it caused a major blockage in their apartment block’s sewage system.
My old neighbour engages in similar acts of subterfuge. She also sometimes flushes the kitty litter down the loo. The difference is her cats poo on shredded newspaper which appears to be gentler on the pipes as she hasn’t had any plumbing issues (touch wood). When she does put the kitty litter in the garbage, she wraps it tightly in newspaper before placing it in a plastic bag. She tries to shove it as far down into the bin as possible (“In case someone opens it.” Ugh). Before disposing the empty cans of Whiskas, she rips off the labels. When I cat sat for her, she showed me where she kept her hidden stash of cat food before reminding me to rip off the labels. If she needs to let a tradesman into her flat for repairs and he happens to see her cats, she will tell him she is cat sitting for her daughter while she’s away. None of the tradesmen seem to care. Neither does the cleaner, who loves cats.
On the other hand, my friend Brett doesn’t care who sees his cats. He lets them poke their heads out through the curtains so they can watch people passing by. His neighbours are well acquainted with them as they love to visit them. Before Butterscotch vanished, Brett’s neighbours would find him or his brother Gingersnap in their backyards and would pick the cat up and return him to Brett.
The only person who seems to care is his real estate agent who has asked Brett to get rid of his cats. Not that Brett is going to do this – he intends to leave them with a friend the next time an inspection is done.
