The Love Animals Bring
October 5th 2007 02:04
My friend Gigi said to me that pets give unconditional love, unlike humans where often love does come with strings attached. Some might disagree but we all have boundaries. Imagine sleeping with your best friend's partner - I doubt any friend, no matter how many times they say they will always be your friend - will stick around after seeing this type of behaviour.
Come to think of it, animals have boundaries too but they tend to be more forgiving than humans. How often do you see a badly treated dog who is still loyal to its master? One only needs to watch RSPCA Animal Rescue to see this.
I remember rocking Higgins, my neighbour's cat, and all of a sudden he hissed and bared his teeth at me. My neighbour said, 'Did he hiss at you? Stop doing whatever you're doing as he's telling you he's not happy.' I am one of the few people who timid Higgins allows to get close to so his reaction was suprising, particularly when I was not rocking him out of malice. Of course, once I stopped the rocking we were friends again.
But being friends with an animal is defintely less complicated than that of a human. When I feel sad I reach out for my friends' pets or stroke a passing dog on the street. As a teenager I used to sit in the backyard and cry while holding my pet ducks and telling them my problems. I have more respect and love for animals than fellow human beings as animals aren't intentionally malicious the way humans can be. If animals fight, it's usually because one of them has crossed another's territory, not like some humans who go out of their way to make others miserable.
And the love and joy they bring to others cannot be measured.
As someone once said, the love from a pet is the only love that money can buy

Like you, I don't believe in unconditional love, that is an absolute nightmare, not a dream. There is no such thing with humans and just as well when you witness what the RSPCA experiences and then compare it with what some humans have to put up with.
We can understand animals, but we are different. Another thing I hate is the expression of "closure" that's impossible and delusional of those who expect it. I wish I could take away the emptiness in your childhood, but I can't, but life does need to be experienced and that involves human beings.
Give to others a little of what you give and feel with animals, with just a little bit of luck you'll reap the rewards.
God Bless you,

I've been looking out for you again, you sound much less angry now, and hearing that account of your childhood made me want to cry.
I, too, love animals so I do understand what you mean.
But people are important too, although I find it hard to mix.
