The Love Between Two Cats
December 10th 2007 21:08
When one of my friends contacted the Cat Protection Society with the intention of adopting a Siamese cat, he instead got a call from them telling him they had a pair of Tonkinese Cats. Tonkinese are half Siamese, half Burmese so my friend was keen until they told him that he had to take both of them; because they were brothers they couldn’t be separated. My friend nevertheless decided to take the two of them, saving two lives. I was touched by his kindness. He said the adoption fee was $220 and that Tonkinese kittens normally sell for around the $1000 mark. When I asked him why the cats had been surrendered, he said their previous owner developed an allergy to them.
When he told me they were in a cage when he went to the animal shelter, I felt very sad. Like all cats, his Tonkinese love to roam around the place, explore the backyard garden and lie in the sun.
My friend says they panic whenever they are separated. For example, if one cat goes to another room, the other will miaow until he finds his brother. My neighbour also has two cats from the same litter and they do the same thing. She reckons if one dies, the other will follow shortly after. This makes me sad. When they were kittens she had planned to sell them through the local pet shop but after a few days, she couldn’t cope seeing them like that and took them home and raised them. They’ve been with her ever since. When she moves, they move along with her – including inter state trips. This is because she believes – as I do – once you have a pet, you have it for life.
