The Maggoty Cat
July 5th 2009 21:01
Tired one day, I decided to take a break from work to chat to a colleague. Somehow the conversation turned to dead cats. My colleague started telling me about the time he came across a dead cat one day. He was a child at the time and was curious about the cat. He kicked it and the body started moving. Underneath it were hundreds of maggots. The motion of his foot caused them to move, causing the carcass to move along on top of them.
The next day, my colleague had to use the same footpath. He was terrified about seeing the cat but it was no longer there. He figured it was so disgusting that someone must have disposed of it.
His story instantly reminded me of a similar incident in my childhood. When I was about eleven, I found a dead kitten at the back of my parents’ restaurant. I nudged it with my foot which caused the kitten to flip over. Like my colleague’s discovery, there were hundreds of maggots underneath the kitten. Exposed to the sun, the maggots started crawling onto the ground. I ran off screaming in horror. Like my colleague’s cat, the next day there was no sign of the kitten or the maggots.

As such we have birds, marsupials, reptiles - it's lovely.
A few months ago, we counted 12 different species of birds visiting our bird-bath.
And all to maggoty cats - and foxes.
