The Mysterious Cat Man

Like most people, I love a good mystery. A few weeks ago I moved to a new floor at my workplace. As usual, after unpacking all my stuff, the first thing I did was to put my favourite cat pictures on my workstation. A few days later, an older man started dropping by and talking to me about cats at lunch time. This became a weekly occurrence. After a few chats, I wondered who he was. I was going to ask him what his name was when he walked off. My colleagues then started to ask me questions about him.

“Who is he?” they’d ask.

“I don’t know.” Being a newcomer to the floor, I naturally assumed he worked on the same floor. So I went around looking for him. I couldn’t see him. Then I remembered seeing him in the kitchen a week or so ago, talking to one of the ladies. I asked her who he was and she also said she didn’t know. However, she did know he worked on another floor.

My colleagues kept asking about him. In the end, they nicknamed him the Cat Man. The challenge was on to find out his identity. When lunch time approached, my colleagues asked me if I had seen him.

“No, I haven’t,” I said. I even went into the kitchen, looking for him. The problem was, he didn’t come onto our floor every day. It could be several days before I saw him again.

But two days later, I was in luck. I spotted my mysterious friend heading my way so I stopped him and introduced myself. He told me his first name and which area he worked in. End of story you might say but it wasn’t. My colleagues looked him up on our system. Like many offices, our system would show a picture of the person along with their contact details. There was no one matching that exact description. We tried different spellings of his name but still no luck. There was, however, someone listed as working in a similar department to his but on the floor below him. There was no picture of that person but I figured from process of elimination that he had to be the mysterious Cat Man.
