The OUC
October 7th 2010 21:00
First there was the GTC (Grouchy Tuxedo Cat). Then there was the CTC (Chunky Tuxedo Cat). Now there is the OUC (One Ugly Cat AKA Butterscotch the Tonkinese cat).
The OUC phenomenon was triggered by a colleague muttering “That’s one ugly cat” when he walked past my desk one day and noticed a photo of Butterscotch with his eyes glowing like two firey orbs on my desk.
Since then, other colleagues have also walked past my desk and have made “ugly cat” comments, despite the fact that my team is now aware that I call Butterscotch my husband.
“That’s my husband,” I said to a new colleague as he sat beside me. I then noticed there was a picture of Brett holding Butterscotch on my desk. “The cat, I mean,” I clarified. The colleague gave me a strange look but said nothing.
“That’s my husband,” I said to another new member to my team. Again, I accidentally pointed to the picture of Brett. “The cat, not the human,” I clarified.
Even my cat-loving ex-neighbour says Butterscotch is OUC. Ditto the cat-loving Fred. “I don’t like that Siamese-y thing,” he complained.
In desperation, I got in touch with a Tonkinese cat breeder. I emailed her some photos of Butterscotch – including the one with glowing eyes – and asked for her opinion.
“I think Butterscotch is a beautiful cat,” she emailed back. “He’s a typical male Tonk with a lovely muzzle and that "I'm doing an impersonation of Joey Tribiani being Dr Drake Ramorez" look.” Brett and I couldn’t agree more.
