The Perfect Christmas Present

One of my friends gave me the perfect Christmas present last Christmas: a copy of Rachael Hale’s Smitten. I was delighted and amazed by her choice. It was remarkable because I buy a lot of cat books with the exception of photography ones. So it was just by chance she happened to choose a book I didn’t have in my cat library.
I have now become a Rachael Hale fan. To go with Smitten, I bought myself a copy of her other companion book, 101 Cataclysms. I did have a copy of this book. Well, sort of: I had purchased it to give to my cat loving ex-neighbour. My neighbour was also delighted with the book.
Even my sister, who usually prefers dogs to cats and says kittens look weird, likes Hale’s books. She says the cats and kittens are beautifully photographed with gentle pastel backdrops. She also thinks Hale doesn’t choose “funny-looking” kittens for her subjects.
I’d love to know how Hale gets her animal subjects to co-operate. It must depend on the animal. For instance, if I was photographing Butterscotch, I would have no problems as he loves the camera and is only too happy to pose. Gingersnap, on the other hand, hates the camera. The moment I pull out my Canon he shuts his eyes or turns his head away. No amount of coaxing will convince him to pose. So I have countless of photos of Gingersnap with his eyes closed or his profile. They are not very interesting to look at.
