As a booklover, I count myself as one of Borders’ most loyal customers. During their closing down sale of the remaining Borders store which happened to be in Bondi Junction, my sister asked me to get some things for her. As requested, I got her the quacking duck key ring. She also wanted a pencil case. The trouble was, at 30% off, it was still too expensive for her.
We started texting each other.
“I can hold off until next week when it will probably be 40% off,” I texted my sister.
“No. Get it now. Borders might be closed next week. Save time,” she replied.
“Borders are open for another five weeks.”
In the end, she still wanted me to get it for her. “Choose the nicest one,” she said, meaning the one in the most pristine condition. It was just as well she told me; when I checked, most of them had marks on them.
I then went searching for a book I was going to get during the Borders Chatswood closing down sale but I had left it too late. By the time they were having 80% off sale, the book had already been sold.
To my surprise, when I did a search on their computer at the BJ store, it did say they had a copy. I went to the fiction area and couldn’t locate it. I then decided to look at the bargain books, the ones that had been marked down to $10 and $15. Despite the fact I thought it was going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack, I managed to locate the book in the bargain area. I put it in a Borders basket and made sure it was right by my side.
For once, the book was not about cats but humans, a species I normally despise.
