The next day, my sister solved her workplace maggot mystery (see previous post).

Arriving at work, she noticed more maggots on her desk. She decided to investigate. She pulled out her drawers and found an old plastic bag full of old Milo. It was completely infested with maggots. My sister’s stomach churned and she managed to dispose of the packet without making a fuss. She then asked the cleaner to fumigate the office.

Her story reminded me of someone we knew who discovered maggots in the packet of flour she kept in the kitchen.

“That’s why I don’t like to keep a lot of food in the kitchen,” I told my sister. “Maggots like rotten food so I only have enough food I can consume within a week. And if I do have anything old, I regularly check it to make sure it hasn’t gone off.”

There have been no complaints since then. Hopefully, my sister has taken my advice – but then again, it’s only early days.

Those aren't maggots in your flour, they're weevil larvae. The Milo infestation, on the other hand, has me a little stumped. For one thing, it's heavily processed, so there's no way the eggs could be in the product, as they are with flour. Then you have to factor in the airtight seal, which should have killed off anything that may have gotten in since it was opened.

Maybe someone put them there...?

Ugh! Thanks for your comment, Jack. My sister is a food hoader which drives me nuts as she ends up throwing out many items. Why would you buy more than you can consume? Not to mention the maggot attraction aspect of rotting food...
