The Story of Ugly

I came across this sad tale in a book called Psychic Cats by Theresa Cheung. Growing up in a rough neighbourhood, a pre-pubescent child ends up in the wrong crowd: a gang of juvenile delinquents who delight in torturing a cat that had no tail and had sores on its head. The child threw stones at the cat, which the cat dodged. Even then, the cat would come up to them, wanting to be stroked.
Finally, one day the child finds the cat dying on the road. The child picks the cat up and it starts to purr before it dies. The child realises how horrid he/she had been and changes his/her ways and decides to become a vet.
I’ve read this story several times and it never fails to move me. The lack of empathy bothers me. How can people be so cruel?
