This is from another email that is currently doing the rounds in my office. My first thought was, huh? It was so surreal, it took my brain a few seconds to register these images. Some of the sheep look weird but I like the cute one that’s sitting down.
From a distance the sheeps’ bodies appear to be constructed from thick grey wool. However, a closer look reveals they are actually made from telephone cords while the feet are from handsets.
Like most artworks, you can’t help but admire the time and patience it must have taken to bring it to life.
The telephones bring back many nostalgic memories for me. Like millions of people, my parents had a similar telephone at home. Years ago there used to be a dance music radio program that aired late every Saturday night. Growing up in a country town, I was starved of dance music and would take the opportunity to ring the station to request songs. I would dial each digit of the radio station’s phone number very slowly so as not to wake my parents up. The problem was the sound of my finger slowly dialling away woke my sister up and she told me to dial “normally”. One time I dialled the number so slowly it didn’t register and I got a wrong number message.
One night while I was on the phone, my father woke up to go to the toilet and heard me talking away. Scared that I was arranging to meet some boy, he started eavesdropping but soon gave up when he realised I was simply ringing a radio station.
Eventually my father installed a five metre cord to the phone so I could drag it into my bedroom so I could ring the station all night long if I wanted.
