The Terrifying Labrador

Looks can be deceptive. A case in point was the scary Labrador that lived near my school. When my best friend, Andrea, and I were growing up, we had always believed all Labradors were friendly dogs. Let’s face it, we grew up in a world that showed little yellow Labrador pups playing with toilet paper on TV and from being told yellow Labs made good guide dogs. No one ever told us Labs could also be good guard dogs. That was until I encountered the yellow Labrador.
One day, while I was walking past the property, this yellow Labrador came flying out of nowhere, barking crazily at me. I was only about 9 or 10 then, still terrified of large vicious dogs, so that was enough to scare me. I learnt to keep away from that property for months on end. My sister and I would avoid going past the property altogether but failing that, we would quickly run past, hoping the Labrador didn’t notice us.
Cut to several months later. Andrea and I were walking around the street and we happened to come near the vicious Labrador’s property.
“There’s a nasty dog that lives there,” I told her.
“Really?” Andrea asked. Her curiosity now aroused, she wanted to see it. “Where is it?” she asked.
I led her closer to the property, which was surrounded by a white picket fence. Sure enough, there was the yellow Labrador lying on the grass in the back, amongst the trees. To anyone who was unfamiliar with that dog, it must have looked liked a gentle dog that was trying to take a nap.
“That’s no vicious dog,” said Andrea, laughing. Just then, the Labrador must have heard us as it came flying towards the white picket fence, barking as ferociously as any Rottweiler. Andrea and I fled for our lives. As we looked behind us, we could still see the Labrador standing on its hind legs while it had its front paws all over the fence, barking wildly.
Andrea also avoided the property after that day.
