“They’re so cute but they stink.”

This must be a Chinese phenomenon. A Chinese colleague was recently saying these exact words to me about rabbits, bringing back many memories of my Chinese parents and other relatives saying the same thing about cats, dogs, rabbits and so on.

So what if they stink? Part and parcel of caring for an animal is taking the good with the bad. For years I had to put up with the stench of duck poo and, even better, was given the responsibility of washing away all the duck poo from our garage where my beloved quackers slept in and I never complained. Not even once. I felt honoured after many years of pleading with my parents to have a pet – whether it was a cat or a dog or a bird – and finally, they relented, letting me and my sister have ducks. And not just ordinary ducks but Pekin ducks. You know, the fluffy white ones people always picture ducks as being, even though there are many breeds of ducks in the world. And later my parents said we could also have budgerigars.

Just in case you think cleaning the duck poo sounds unfair, my sister had the equally unenviable task of cleaning up after her budgies which meant taking out the budgie litter every day or so.

Whenever my parents see photos of Butterscotch and Gingersnap, all they can talk about is how cat poo must stink. Well, yes, it does but so what? At least the smell is isolated to their kitty litter tray. My friend Brett only has one litter tray for his babies (yes, I know, cat books always say you should have one per cat and a spare one as a backup but so far, there has been no problems with his cats sharing a litter tray. Maybe it’s because they’re littermates and they love each other dearly.)

I think people notice the cat pee stench in our house. We just have so many, and now that the boys vasectomy has healed up, they're toms again, so they spray. Theres a couch in the common area and they've given that a good go, as well as the toys. About once a week, it gets washed, aired and blasted with febreeze, but I dont think it helps.

I think people realize though, you cant complain to me about it, when I come in covered in filth and smelling like horse. I think horse is the most wondeful smell in the world.
