This Had me in Tears

October 1st 2008 03:50
I am in mourning again. This time it is over the sad grisly fate of two dogs:

It's funny how I get more upset over bad things that happen to animals rather than those to humans. I think what really gets me is how often animals are too tiny to fight back. Even a large dog could be no match against several determined humans armed with weapons.

I find it hard to believe people can be so cruel. I spent this morning trying not to cry.

I heard about this on the radio. Its just awful....Like you, I get much more upset about cruelty to animals than people. I think its because even if it comes down to torture, a human can accept it, reason with it, and a human knows that death will come to save them. Animals cant concieve of such a concept, and I think it makes their pain worse.

Same here. And also, animals seem more innocent in the sense that they don't impose senseless violence on each other the way humans do. Even when animals fight, there is usually a reason behind it (e.g. protecting their territory, fighting for a mate). There is absolutely no need for those dogs to be subjected to any type of violence. That goes for all animals.

Hey Queenie,

they don't impose senseless violence on each other

I used to believe that, but given a chance to become well fed and bored, animals do destroy just like people do. The colt would easily kill the geldings just because of his herding instinct. Yes, he has a reason for it, his instincts push him to herd, fight, kill, so he is only obeying his instincts, but its there.

Kleonaptra, that's interesting. But still, there's a sense of innocence in animals that humans don't seem to share. Maybe it's because a lot of human violence is premeditated while with animals, as you say, they are simply following their instincts.

I think thats true, but I believe humans generally follow their instincts as well. In cases like this, its boredom and power and the ultimate of bullying gone right out of control...And that is something we do that animals never do.
