This is not What you Think

After shopping for books one day, one of my colleagues asked me if I had purchased anything. This is a routine we go through every week: I borrow his discount card and when I return it, he’ll ask me what I got. (I would buy my own discount card to this particular shop if it wasn’t for the fact it is expensive and, based on past experience, I don’t buy enough books from this store to recoup the annual membership fee.)
Usually I say nothing as I try not to buy things but every now and then, I do come back armed with new books. Like a few days ago.
“I got these two,” I said, showing him the titles. The first one, The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer and Jim Mason HERE didn’t draw much of a response: “Why would you need to read a book about this?” he asked. “Obviously it is better to be vegetarian.”
That wasn’t how he reacted when he saw the second title which was Green Porno by Isabella Rossellini HERE . The ‘Exclusive DVD inside’ comment on the front cover only enhanced its suggestiveness. My colleague looked at me in horror.
“It’s not what you think,” I quickly said. “It’s about how animals mate.”
My colleague looked relieved. So was I as by now one or two people were listening in to our conversation and the last thing I needed was a rumour going around the office that I buy porn.
